HADAG ferry type II "Schulau" as a conversion and extension project

Hadag ferry type II "Lola" (formerly Schulau)
Location: 21737 Wischhafen

The Hadag type ships were an integral part of the Port of Hamburg from the early 1950s until the late 1980s. The robust ferries with space for up to 600 passengers, the "Schulau is authorised for up to 390 passengers, performed their service reliably. Due to their solid construction, the type ships were considered "unsinkable", kept the harbour basins clear in icy conditions and were used as fireboats. To this day, part of the "Green Fleet" is still in use as a restaurant, hotel or excursion boat. The ferry "Jungfernstieg" actually made it as far as the American continent, proving the seaworthiness of the type ships. Initially used as a diving ship, she ran aground on the Mexican coast during a hurricane and has been an artificial reef and a hotspot for diving tourists ever since.

The "Lola" (formerly Schulau) is a type II ship, launched in 1954 and put into service by Hadag in 1955. Here the ship was mainly used for harbour tours and as a replacement for the liner service. In 1958, the "Schulau" was also equipped as a fireboat. After being taken out of service, the "Schulau" was sold in 2000. One year later, Captain L. W. acquired the ferry, which has been known as the "Lola" ever since. Initially planned as a residential ship, it was ultimately to be converted and extended into a hotel and restaurant ship. The project was abandoned due to personal changes.

The "Lola" is expressly offered as a project for refurbishment and extension. Due to her design and the space available, she is ideally suited as a platform for a catering business with an experience character, as an exclusive hotel ship, as an event ship for events of all kinds or as an excursion ship. The ship can even be restored as a museum ship, as it is largely in its original condition. The wide entrances on the port and starboard sides provide safe access to the "Lola" The wet cells are located in the stern. A staircase leads from the entrance area to the upper deck. Towards the bow, behind two heavy wooden doors, is the large saloon. The upper deck can be reached via the stairs in the saloon. There is a large cabin to starboard from the saloon. On the port side, a vestibule with a fireplace leads to the companionway to the engine room and another large cabin. At the end of the corridor you step out to the anchor windlass. There are two cabins on the lower deck. The crew's cabin still has the original interior. The engine room is equipped with everything needed for the technical operation of the "Lola". There is plenty of space, including a workbench, tools and spare parts. If you enter the upper deck via the saloon, you will find the current catering area with several seats on the port side and the kitchenette with a solid wooden worktop, a former plank, on the starboard side. Below the bridge, which can be reached via two steps, there is plenty of space. There are currently approx. 100 life jackets stored there, as well as supplies and much more.
The bridge is practical, functional and largely still in its original state. From here you have a good overview and access to the two nocks. Starting from the upper deck, there is stern access to the large open deck with crane, lifeboat and fire extinguishing system.
The main engine of the "Lola" starts without any problems. The gearbox and shaft run perfectly. The old and dead electrical cables were replaced and modernised. New brass switches were also installed. The CO2 extinguishing system is also in order. The "Lola" is therefore fully ready to drive.
In recent years, a great deal of time and money has been invested in the maintenance and modernisation of the "Lola". The riveted hull and superstructure have been largely derusted and treated against corrosion, both inside and out. The stairs to the upper deck and the panelling are made of solid Kaya mahogany. The floors on the upper deck were replaced with solid bongosso planks. The same applies to the main deck with saloon and cabins, although approx. 2 square metres (props and planks) are still missing here. The wet cells in the stern were repaired.
The current owners have provided a cost breakdown (totalling approx. 150,000 euros) of the work still required to convert the "Lola" into a hotel ship. A further, external, cost breakdown (totalling approx. 160,000 euros) for converting the "Lola" into a restaurant ship is also available.

The current berth, in a private, former shipyard in Wischhafen, can be taken over. Detailed instruction in the ship's technology is guaranteed by the current owner. A transfer is possible by arrangement.
